What is immunology?

Immunology is the study of the immune system, a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to defend the body against harmful substances, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi. The immune system also plays a vital role in identifying and eliminating abnormal or damaged cells, such as cancerous cells.

This field of study has significant implications for human health and disease, as it helps us understand how the immune system can be harnessed or modulated to prevent, diagnose, and treat a wide range of medical conditions, including allergies.

What is an immunologist?

Immunologists are scientists or medical professionals who specialize in studying the immune system’s functions, including how it responds to various substances, how it distinguishes between harmful and harmless agents, and how it malfunctions in cases of immune system disorders, such as allergies, autoimmune diseases, and immunodeficiencies.

FAQ’s

  • Common allergy symptoms can vary depending on the type of allergen and the individual's sensitivity. However, some of the most frequently observed symptoms include:

    • Sneezing

    • Runny or stuffy nose

    • Itchy or watery eyes

    • Itchy throat or ears

    • Postnasal drip

    • Coughing

    • Hives or skin rash

    • Swelling of the face, lips, or tongue

    • Wheezing or shortness of breath

    • Anaphylaxis (a severe, life-threatening allergic reaction)

It's important to note that these symptoms can also be caused by conditions other than allergies. If you suspect you have an allergy, it's best to consult with a certified asthma and allergy consultant or immunologist for accurate diagnosis and treatment.

  • To get allergy testing, you should see an allergist or immunologist. Just like our board-certified allergy specialists, these are trained in diagnosing and treating allergies and can provide appropriate tests and treatments based on your specific needs.

  • It's a good idea to see a doctor for allergies in the following situations:

    • Unclear triggers. If you're unsure of what's causing your allergic reactions, a doctor can help identify the allergens through tests and recommend appropriate management strategies.

    • Persistent or severe symptoms. If your allergy symptoms are ongoing, interfere with your daily life, or worsen it's time to consult a healthcare professional.
Ineffectiveness of over-the-counter treatments. If you've tried over-the-counter allergy medications without success, a doctor can prescribe stronger medications or recommend other treatment options.

    • Frequent sinus or ear infections. Recurrent infections can be a sign of an underlying allergy that needs to be addressed.

    • Asthma or breathing difficulties. If you have asthma or experience wheezing or shortness of breath along with allergy symptoms, it's essential to check in with consultants in asthma allergy and immunology to ensure proper management of both conditions.

    • Anaphylaxis risk. If you've ever had a severe allergic reaction or are at risk of anaphylaxis, consult a doctor for guidance on emergency treatment and prevention strategies.

  • To prepare for your allergy consultation bring medical records and a list of symptoms and suspected allergens. Provide any relevant medical records, including previous allergy test results, and a list of allergens or triggers you suspect may be causing your symptoms. This information will help your allergist better understand your allergy history and tailor the testing process.
